Big Tech Is Realizing Something: Their AI Can't Keep Messing Up on This Scale
- taylodl 2y agoPeople make mistakes, too. That's the nature of intelligence, "artificial" or not. What's surprising to some people, though it shouldn't be if you spent more than a couple seconds thinking about it, is the mistakes AI makes are different than the mistakes humans make. As far as "messing up" is concerned, I'm more concerned about my car attempting to drive me into a train than I am with Gemini returning an obviously absurd result that I can discard.
- poopcat 2y agoGood point! I think part of the tension comes from the fact that there's this idea that AI is superior or will be superior to people. If this is the case, it doesn't make sense for it to make so many mistakes. In a way, you could say that the mistakes mess up our preconceived notion of what AI is supposed to be. Ditto on the car thing, tho. Much scarier that weird AI photos with too many fingers
- zero-sharp 2y agoIntelligent people make mistakes, sure. But AI has the potential to mislead at greater scales. And I really don't like when people try to trivialize this issue. Not all incorrect AI answers are/will be "obviously absurd." Some may be incorrect at a more subtle level. It might be so subtle as to require domain expertise to correct. Are you telling me that this isn't going to happen? People carry so much confidence about this technology. But just a few weeks ago, Google was telling me to drink urine to fix my kidney stones. And this was deemed to be mature enough to put into production? Oh, but what you're saying is that it will get the harder questions correct?
- taylodl 2y agoLike I said, I'm more concerned with my car attempting to drive me into a train than I am getting bad medical advice for which I could, and should, be consulting with my doctor. Application is everything.
