SGI Internal Memo: IRIX 5.1 40% slower than 4.0 (1993)
- 9659 2y agoHistory repeats itself. Note the agonizing over memory. They were targeting a 16 MB machine. We have the same problem. Ever try running linux on a 4GB machine? It naturally desires 16 GB nowdays.
- 1oooqooq 2y agoLinux is fine with lower ram. but it will obviously use more for caching. and nobody truly bought sgi machines with 16mb ram. not even pizza boxes.

- kristianp 2y agoAnd example of bloat from the memo: > The news reader "xrn", starts out small, but leaks memory so badly that within a week or so it grows to 9 or 10 megabytes, along with plenty of other large programs. Amazing that 10MB is tiny by today's standards and that was reached only through a memory leak!
