  Paper books generally cost money. This would be akin to an online journal article purchase, or some sort of pay per download.

    The point is that different forms of print media vary greatly in terms of advertising: Magazines and newspapers - lots of ads. Comic books - some ads. Graphic novels and manga - few if any ads. Books and academic journals - usually few if any ads. (Magazine type journals do feature ads however.)
