Washer-dryer combo units (sometimes called "laundry centers") have been around for a long time in the RV, marine, and apartment markets where space- and water-savings are essential. Coincidentally, most Japanese households also greatly value space-savings. Splendide[1] has been in the business since 1984, and according to Wikipedia the first washer-dryer combo unit was invented in 1953 by Bendix[2][3]. Both are American companies.
