I think it’s similar to nukes. It all boils down to game theory. If AGI is within reach, the first country to get it will have a giant economic and military advantage. All other countries will either have to develop their own AGI or ally with an AGI capable nation. The race is on. I think most people who are trying to push AGI either believe it will be controllable by humans or will be like a benevolent deity. Those that believe it will be uncontrollable and malevolent obviously don’t want it to exist, unless they are doomsday cultists.
