Hacker Accesses Internal 'Tile' Tool That Provides Location Data to Cops
- avidiax 2y agoCan Apple even respond to LE requests? Seems like a pretty solid reason to prefer AirTags over Tiles.
- Doxin 2y agoI mean it seems fairly self-evident to me the only reason to go with Tile instead of airtags is that apple refuses to support airtags on android. I've got a Tile on my dog, because I'll be fucked to go buy a whole-ass new phone (of a brand I don't even like) just in case my dog runs off. Other than that airtags seem clearly superior along basically all metrics.
- kotaKat 2y agoYes. In fact, when you set up an AirTag, you get a giant warning that even says "Apple cooperates with law enforcement" reminding you that the tag is linked to your Apple ID.
- avidiax 2y ago> Apple cannot view the location of any AirTag or supported third-party products. > With a serial number, Apple may be able to provide the paired account details in response to a subpoena or greater legal process. AirTag pairing history is available for a period up to 25 days. So yes, Apple will assist LE requests, but they can only link a discovered airtag to an Apple ID, not location data as with Tile. https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/law-enforcement-guidelines-us.pdf https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/law-enforcement-guidelin...
- KRAKRISMOTT 2y agoWell, it's a good thing that the current Tile CEO is on HN to rebut the accusations hmm? Maybe he will "unleash millions of dollars worth of lawyers". https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=crhulls https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=crhulls https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34838235 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34838235 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40350571 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40350571 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30304917 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30304917
