In Australia we've been able to do BSB (simpler domestic version of IBAN) for decades, and we introduced NPP 6 years ago. All banks now have instant transfer between each other via the BSB method or via your own unique identifier you can pick and give out (your phone number, email, etc). The focus on P2P pay makes me think that despite how profitable Google and Apple are, their mindset is still US centric which is surely not the country the majority of their profit comes from, given their global reach. Surely they leave money on the table constantly with this focus?
