Musk warns that he will ban Apple devices if OpenAI is integrated at OS level
- throwaway211 2y agoThis is Chuck Norris vs an immobile object.
- uberman 2y agoI'll note that he is not going to ban them from his platforms.
- delichon 2y agoIf Apple can convince people that this isn't an open channel to their data by OpenAI, then this is a nothing burger. If not there will be a lot of companies rethinking Apple. Remember that classic Apple commercial from 1983? And you'll see why 1984 won't be like '1984'. So true. It took another forty years.
- smt88 2y ago> If Apple can convince people that this isn't an open channel to their data by OpenAI, then this is a nothing burger. If not there will be a lot of companies rethinking Apple. I completely disagree. Most companies so far have shown no serious concern about sending data to OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft via LLM services. You could argue that a vanilla Android device sends as much data to Google as an Apple device could ever send to OpenAI.
- delichon 2y agoI code for the publishing industry. We're hearing from our customers that they care a lot about being scraped by LLMs and they're pressing us for defenses. Business models are being reshaped.
- smt88 2y agoThat is a small and extremely specific industry. It is not the norm. Most people don't have customers who are existentially terrified over AI replacing them.
- artninja1988 2y agoA manufacturer being able to gatekeep what kinds of infotainment systems I can use and which ones I can't isn't dystopian at all
- throwaway211 2y agoApple have built a business model around that since iTunes. Not that I disagree with it being dystopian. And then there's hardware encoding of codecs. In the end, this all stops with Apple and Microsoft.
- cocodill 2y agoif so, we've never been this close to another year of "linux on the desktop".
