Passenger tracks missing luggage to home of airport store worker
- smartbit 2y agoEarlier this week https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40604349 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40604349 in WashingtonPost https://archive.is/DtA6T https://archive.is/DtA6T
- perihelions 2y ago- "the airline issued a reimbursement check to the woman whose luggage was stolen, “as a courtesy.”" This is an underhanded tactic to make it more difficult for the victim to sue the airline. Accepting compensation complicates a lawsuit, if you are suing for (larger amounts of) compensation.
- thriftwy 2y agoWhy would you sue if you have been compensated adequately? I would say the opposite: The failure of a customer facing business to compensate their client adequately when they've clearly screwed up opens them to larger losses via lawsuit. They've "bought" the damages from you and may now take action against the airport worker as a victim.
- perihelions 2y ago- "Why would you sue if you have been compensated adequately?" The amount is not adequate and is not the settlement a victim represented by attorneys would negotiate. A victim without legal counsel would not realize this.
- thriftwy 2y agoI agree with this, but that's just extra compensation for having to interact with lawyers and the possibility of losing or getting stuck. So the customer-facing business can very often accept a deal when it's still cheap by not growing extra transaction costs aroung you. Come to think you, lawsuit decision is basically a deal you can't refuse.
- hef19898 2y agoEven better question: why is this case of simple theft on the HN front page? Edit: It was not the airline who stole anything, it was, allegedly, an airport employee.
- lkdfjlkdfjlg 2y agobEcAuSe ItS iNtErEsTiNg Seriously, every time I ask that question that's the answer I get, because the guidelines say that "HN isn't just tech or business, it's anything that's interesting". So I guess someone found a case of theft interest.
- halfmatthalfcat 2y agoBecause using Find My beyond "did I forget my phone" is topically interesting for HN.
- Irishsteve 2y agoI use https://news.ycombinator.com/classic https://news.ycombinator.com/classic sounds like you might prefer that
- hef19898 2y agoInteresting, what's the difference?
- perihelions 2y agoSlower page update, that tends to filter out this kind of ("news"-like) HN story. Things that pop up on the front page, and fall off 30 minutes later, will not show up there. https://news.ycombinator.com/best https://news.ycombinator.com/best takes it even further in the "slow" direction.
- lostmsu 2y agoHow did you see this story then?
- lkdfjlkdfjlg 2y agoCouldn't you also make the case that offering compensation is an admission of guilt? If the airline compensates unfairly, they haven't compensated properly but just admitted guilt.
- hef19898 2y agoThere are rules about how airlines compensate for lost luggage. International ones, no admission of guilt involved. People tend to ignore just how rare, in percentage, and how often, in abolute numbers, lost luggage is.
- mschuster91 2y agoAmazing that people still try to pull off this shit, with AirTags being hidden everywhere...
