An American Dream of Housing Became a Reality in Sweden
- al_borland 2y agoI was told my grandparents old house (in the US) was a factory built home, but it looked fairly normal. I just looked it up and it was built in 1956. There are also modular homes which are still common, which are built in a factory and shipped out some location. The issue in the US, as far as I can tell, is that these homes are seen as less desirable. People don't want them, and even if someone was ok with it, they may still be unlikely to buy one because the resale market isn't good. A "normal" house in the US is going to go up in value, while a modular home is going to go down in value. From what I've seen they are $80-120k new, but older one can be bought for $5-20k. Few people want to sign up for car-like depreciation on a home. In cities, they are usually in trailer parks, which have a stigma. It also means a person is only paying for the home, not the land under it which is where the real value is. The other place they are common is on big plots of land. Someone will buy 10+ acres and get a modular home so they have some place to stay without spending a ton of money, since they invested most of their money in the land.
