Meta to use Instagram/Facebook posts from 2007 to train AI tools
- teeray 2y agoSo in true early Facebook fashion, every response from the AI will now start with “Meta AI is…”
- blackeyeblitzar 2y agoWill they respect the deletion of content and accounts? For that matter is there a way to bulk delete posts or edit them with random text? My recollection is that Facebook and Instagram make it very hard to delete old content in bulk.
- hi-v-rocknroll 2y agoIt's hard to say. I inadvertently had 2 FB accounts and their system kept instabanning the one I was rehabilitating as a requirement to work there. The other one had an email address I no longer had access to but had set things to private. Nowadays though, European law may compel compliance for data export and right to be forgotten. If not, there are/were scripts that used the API to delete content for you. "Just never post stuff online with your name associated with it." is only durable truth.
- linuxandrew 2y agoI deleted my then-active Facebook account at the end of 2023 without issue. Last week I found out via an email about AI @ Meta that I still have an old account, which I don't have the password for, but still have access to the email address. I tried contacting support, and 8 days later, it's not going well. https://roffey.au/2024/deleting-a-facebook-account.html https://roffey.au/2024/deleting-a-facebook-account.html
- BoredPositron 2y agoI know there are properly humans in the background answering but conversing with an llm wouldn't be worse than what you qre going through.
- petre 2y agoReport them to the privacy regulator in your country using the conversation as evidence.
- linuxandrew 2y agoThat's exactly the plan if it's not resolved soon. I intend to make a formal complaint following the Australian Privacy Commissioner's process[1], and if it's not resolved, then a complaint to the Privacy Commissioner. Unfortunately Australia's right to be forgotten is pretty weak[2] unlike in Europe. The law reform commission recommended changing up the Privacy Act to extend to deletion but it was never implemented. Nonetheless organisations must destroy or de-identify personal information when it is no longer required. I'm not really sure how this one's going to go. I guess Facebook will probably just delete the account before it goes to the commissioner. If it goes to the commissioner I have no idea if they'll accept my reasoning for Facebook to delete my account or not. Facebook might argue they still have use for my personal information. The commissioner may reject my complaint for various reasons and they are not really obliged to investigate it. 1: https://www.oaic.gov.au/privacy/privacy-complaints/complain-to-an-organisation-or-agency https://www.oaic.gov.au/privacy/privacy-complaints/complain-... 2: https://www.alrc.gov.au/publication/serious-invasions-of-privacy-in-the-digital-era-dp-80/15-new-regulatory-mechanisms/a-new-privacy-principle-for-deletion-of-personal-information/ https://www.alrc.gov.au/publication/serious-invasions-of-pri...
