actually I see this the other way around. Doctors should be paragons of compassion and empathy, able to anticipate and answer any questions their patients have. It's not an academic role, it's not the kind of thing you can train 10 years for at school. In fact, the current rigorous training regime for doctor's probably acts to filter out empathic and compassionate people, or just those qualities out of them.
Why shouldn't doctors be trained in "how to use MedGPT" and "when to trust it and when not to" and keep all their emotional faculties intact for their career? I'd rather see a doctor who understood what I'm going through and had to ask the machine for deeper insight, than a doctor that already has the answer but acts like a machine.
- gregjor 2y agoYou describe the role of a therapist, priest, best friend. Doctors train in science and should focus primarily on the science of medicine. I suppose it feels better when the physician also shows some empathy and compassion, but their job comes down to healing and saving lives. Too much emotional involvement with patients actually gets in the way, which is why physicians generally don't treat their own family. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10523028/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10523028/
