Does it take a bad person to be a good athlete?
- 082349872349872 2y agoMy experience of good (international+) jocks is that they may be "poor" neighbours yet are still far from being bad people.

- 082349872349872 2y agoNow that is amazing: take advantage of the periodicity of the peloton. I take it skate-sucking has roughly the same aerodynamic advantages that wheel-sucking does with bikes? I'll argue for it being (Aristotelian) Prudence. (maybe with a corresponding deficit of Justice, but hey, if you're strong enough to make the single lap "negative phase" breakaway without getting reeled in, why not?) Sun Wukong (孙悟空), the Monkey King, would've done just the same... compare "most beautiful action": https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40425702 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40425702 EDIT: the other skaters should've just sped up and left her hanging; by playing the phase game themselves they could've forced her to fight the wind alone while they were still packed up — and that, due to the circular nature of the track, over an arbitrary distance.

- 082349872349872 2y agoNow I've got a reread of Aristotle (was it NE?) queued up. My working model of his virtues since the XX has been a cardinal one: Courage ↑ Justice←♦→Prudence ↓ Temperance Where Courage helps us to take risks when they are worthwhile, and Temperance to avoid them when they would be dangerous, while Prudence helps us to act in our own interests, and Justice to act in everyone's interests. (Courage and Temperance are balanced in opposition when a risk is on the efficient frontier; Prudence and Justice when an action is clearly beneficial, but requires either sacrificing personal/ingroup interest to collective, or vice versa) But if much younger me had somehow come up with an interpretation which I can no longer justify when revisiting the text: well, it wouldn't be the first time! (then again, I think it is possible to assign vices to all the corners of the diagram above: for example, "Vigilantism" could be top left.)
