  It's worth reading the "RODRIGUEZ and HILL’s Knowledge and Intent for Criminal Proceeds to be Laundered by Samourai" section of the indictment: https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/founders-and-ceo-cryptocurrency-mixing-service-arrested-and-charged-money-laundering https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/founders-and-ceo-crypto... They were just plain stupid if they thought they would get away with it.
