A person ultimately has two options. He can either conform his mind to reality, or reality to his mind. The first leads to truth, the second leads to rationalization, delusion, and insanity. Humility favors the first. Pride favors the second. As Satan famously says in "Paradise Lost", "The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven." It's not an accident Milton puts those words in the lips of that particular character.
