Is polar ice very sooty?
- itishappy 2y agoI suspect it gets more and more so as the ice melts and particles trapped in the ice don't.
- fatihpense 2y agoInteresting argument, so you think the non-white particles of each layer might accumulate while layers of ice melt
- itishappy 2y agoI could also see them washing off with the meltwater, but I'd bet some stick around. I'm no expert, so I'd take my ideas with a grain of salt.
- hinkley 2y agoThere are pictures where people walked out on snowpack and scooped out a handful of snow, then they come back months later and there's an ice stalactite as tall as a man left behind.
- throwup238 2y agoIt's not very sooty in Antarctica because its further from human activity but Arctic ice can get pretty dirty after volcanic eruptions or wildfires. Greenland gets it especially bad from all the Canadian fires that are nearly annual now: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2017/06/26/wildfires-can-cause-glaciers-to-melt-from-over-a-thousand-miles-away-scientists-find/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/20...
