Google to start permanently deleting users' location history
- Spivak 2y agoStorage getting expensive it seems for data that's probably hard to use for ads and radioactive because law enforcement wants it.
- pclmulqdq 2y agoI would have thought that it's easy to use for ads, but it's certainly both creepy and a huge legal risk. It may be just inefficient per byte to use for ads, so they might just process the important bits and throw out the rest.
- zx8080 2y agoIt's really hard to believe that Google deletes some data permanently. Especially location data, as it's pretty valuable for their core business: ads. Do they delete it after some aggregation?
- stubish 2y agoData has value, but it also has a cost. The value tends to decrease over time, and at some point it makes economic sense to destroy it. The cost is interesting, as it might be going up as privacy becomes a bigger issue. Particularly location data, which has been in courts around the world for various reasons.
- SR2Z 2y agoGoogle absolutely deletes data! Even if there were no privacy reasons to do so, the storage costs for old raw data far outweigh its value. That being said, refined/aggregated data is kept around for longer, although even that will eventually be deleted.
