Stress bragging may make you seem less competent, less likable at work
- ksaj 2y agoStress Bragging is a big thing in infosec these days. I generally mute people who start off constantly bragging about how much they enjoy the job, followed immediately by 3 or 4 additional posts on how they can barely manage getting up in the morning because they're so stressed out. It literally tells me that you love the job, but aren't good at it, and that's why it's so hard. I've been in the biz since the early 90's and I don't remember it being so onerous. Sometimes letting off steam is good for you. But when half your tweets or toots are about how you're going out of your mind because you can't get anything else done in life, you're totally in the wrong business. One doesn't always have to be professional, but blathering endlessly about how tough your job is, directly to others doing the same job, means you really shouldn't be there. Choose something easier, like data entry.
- ehnto 2y agoIt's worth noting that you do not actually know what other's roles are like, even if you have done the same role before. I find stress is usually about the company and people in it, not the actual work you were hired to do. I love software dev, I enjoy where I work now and am stressed very rarely. That was absolutely not true of my last job, and the role was not the issue, if only I could have done some software dev in between all the bullshit that made it stressful.
- ksaj 2y agoAs professionals, they should be aware of how they come across in public. I'm not saying they are incompetent at all (although I've met a few where that could be debated) but that they make themselves appear incompetent by complaining in public about their jobs, to people who also do the same or related job but don't have so many complaints about it. Having a rough day is one thing. Having a feed full of complaints about how grueling the biz is, is a whole different can of (annoying) beans. Ironically two of the most belly-achy of people I know in the biz are also tutors. I wouldn't want a tutor that complains so constantly about what it is they're teaching. We've all had school teachers that hate their jobs. They make the class excruciating. It's truly an appearance thing. If you have one of the enviable jobs on the lot, why sully it by complaining about how badly you apparently can't handle it?
- ehnto 2y agoI more or less agree in that regard, I think social media is a terrible place to be putting your professional life in general especially if it's negative. That's a personal opinion I guess, I'm not a very negative person so I don't mesh well with people who are always complaining.
- bravetraveler 2y agoStress bragging could be someone projecting and representative of someone else too competent and likable at work How is one to create back pressure if they must smile and take 'it', whatever it is? I left a place because despite my protestations, more not-my-job kept being piled on. I was the trustworthy one.
