Despite tech advancements, NASA struggles to match Apollo program achievements
It took NASA just eight years to go from nothing to a successful Moon landing during the Space Age of the 1960s. However, twenty years and $93 billion after announcing the return to the Moon with the Artemis program, the goal seems as far out of reach as ever.
For example, the Artemis mission architecture was complex to the point of incoherence, with puzzle pieces that don't seem to come from the same box. The rocket and spacecraft NASA spent two decades building, the Space Launch System (SLS), can't even reach the Moon.
NASA has been unable to match the cost, performance, and safety standards set by the much simpler and more cost-effective Apollo program.
For the first time since the early 1960's, it's unclear whether NASA is even capable of putting astronauts on the Moon. Despite decades of technological progress, NASA appears to have lost some of the engineering competence and project management skills that enabled the rapid success of Apollo.
Am I the only one who feels this way?
