Great post. Worthwhile reading. The industrial revolution was indeed a big deal. I have one suggestion for the author: Please also show plots with a logarithmic scale on the vertical axis, instead of only a linear scale. The logarithmic scale does a good job of showing how growth rates change over time; the linear scale doesn't. When you plot a quantity growing exponentially on a linear scale, the past will always looks like a nearly flat line.
