It isn’t guaranteed his successor would be less of a warmonger.
Most likely, his successor would make a judgment call somewhere between the extremes of blaming the west for all of Russia’s problems and continuing the war, possibly more fervently, and of blaming Putin for all of Russia’s problems and getting out of Ukraine, with the judgment call not being on what’s best for the world, but on what’s best for his successor.

In fact, from what I heard from leaders in Kyiv on a journalism trip I took in 2022, the common thought is if something happened to Putin his successor would likely be a _larger warmonger_. The guy is _very_ smart, and easily figured out it would be unwise for his personal well being to surround himself with Peace and Western Loving capable lieutenants. Sad for the people of Ukraine, and hope sooner rather than later peace comes for their sake.
