- belter 2y agoThe story mentioned many times, and that Pentagon mentioned communicated to the Russians, is that the use of a tactical nuclear weapon would trigger a full and complete conventional response and the destruction of the Russian forces in Ukraine. It seems in 2022, the Pentagon believed so strongly, Russians were really close to use them, and the US called upon diplomatic pressures by India and China to dissuade Putin: https://youtu.be/gk7D_TliAuE?t=928 https://youtu.be/gk7D_TliAuE?t=928 But Russian forces would retire back behind Russia borders, and anyway it's a bit like saying, if you shoot your gun I will take my knife out... Best option would be Putin getting close to a window.

- belter 2y agoAll those scenarios are sadly quite possible, and it shows the madness and the recklessness of the Russian leadership in even entertaining such threats, and voicing them publicly. So many windows in Moscow...
- Someone 2y ago> Best option would be Putin getting close to a window. It isn’t guaranteed his successor would be less of a warmonger. Most likely, his successor would make a judgment call somewhere between the extremes of blaming the west for all of Russia’s problems and continuing the war, possibly more fervently, and of blaming Putin for all of Russia’s problems and getting out of Ukraine, with the judgment call not being on what’s best for the world, but on what’s best for his successor.
- breck 2y ago> It isn’t guaranteed his successor would be less of a warmonger. In fact, from what I heard from leaders in Kyiv on a journalism trip I took in 2022, the common thought is if something happened to Putin his successor would likely be a _larger warmonger_. The guy is _very_ smart, and easily figured out it would be unwise for his personal well being to surround himself with Peace and Western Loving capable lieutenants. Sad for the people of Ukraine, and hope sooner rather than later peace comes for their sake.
