I don't really understand how executives get away with big compensation. Shareholders/Owners should be getting the returns. I understand you need smart people

I don't really understand how executives get away with big compensation. Shareholders/Owners should be getting the returns. I understand you need smart people with vision, but I imagine you could go to the executive board of any nearly company and get someone for 500k/yr and they will have similar odds of success.
