Messenger is a product born of an app called Beluga, https://www.adweek.com/performance-marketing/facebook-messenger-beluga/ https://www.adweek.com/performance-marketing/facebook-messen.... It wasn't an app where they took the userbase, but the app was bought and the team tasked to build Messenger. (Source, I worked at FB from 2009-2016)
