My immediate thought was that I couldn’t do it for two reasons:
- fear of getting caught
- conscience
I suppose it depends on your own situation also. I can see someone else doing it, but personally I could never handle that kind of stress. Things can come to light years later.
But the story itself is crazy. The person who denied this money probably needs to find a new place to live out of fear of retaliation.
- tombert 2y agoI'm almost positive I would have reported it as well, but I'm in a relatively financially stable situation; an extra $120,000 would of course be nice, but it's not the difference between "eating" and "not eating" or "being homeless" or "not being homeless" for me. I was extremely broke in 2016, to a point where I was being sued by my landlord for back rent because I had stopped paying it because I had no money, and it's something I think about a lot because it has made it easier to empathize with people who do questionable things when desperate. If someone had plopped $120,000 of cash on my doorstep in 2016, I would like to think I would do the right thing and report it to the cops, and I am pretty sure I would, but I can't say that with certainty.
- blacksmith_tb 2y agoExactly, plata o plomo (silver or lead, that is). Presumably some people might also realize it's not trivial to actually bank $120K in cash, and don't look forward to pretending they had a series of garage sales and ebay successes (which the IRS still would like you to report...)
