There used to be hacker co-ops and stuff in sf, there still may be but they cater to an older demographic. And are quite pricy imo. You may consider looking for a house/summer housing around Berkeley. Possibly a sublet/boarding at the Berkeley student housing/co-ops would put you in touch with a more college crowd.
