I am very disappointed.
Any dominant species in a local ecosystem faces three problem categories that could destabilize the population.
3. Selective factors, internal and external, like diseases or lethal competition (war), etc.
2. Waste products that slowly poison the population or degrade the ecosystem.
1. Resources or food supply overshoot.
Can you name a man made large scale problem that does not fall in one of these categories?
This is how i like to think about our long term future. The article talks about
> Each week, a guest expert gave a lecture and fielded questions about a topic related to existential risk: nuclear annihilation, climate catastrophe, biothreats, misinformation, A.I.
and rambles on students discussions and classes.
CO2 is just one of our many waste products which means climate change is just a sub set of our actual problem. Sustainability ultimately means solving category 1 and 2 and yet, the public discourse is far off anything related.
75% of our phosphate, to produce fertilizer comes from marokko, where it is mined, spread all over the globe and then ends up in local ecosystems/aquifers. Closing that vital circle to approach global food production sustainability requires huge investments in our urban waste water treatment but unfortunately, we will adress this problem when its already too late yet again.
We are doomed unless we understand the problems we face. Dont read this worthless article.
