There are some discussions that shouldn’t be legitimized with a real reply.
Imagine this being a public street. A stupid comment would get heckled. If the commenter decided to stay there with a megaphone yelling about it, they might even get the megaphone ripped out their hand and completely sidelined.
Some opinions are so _against the grain_ of society (or in this case, just stupid) that facing a reaction like you did is probably the least amount of pushback you could get.
- roenxi 2y agoThe authoritarians are a particularly dangerous minority, but they are still a significant part of society. "We should try authoritarian tactics!" is always going to be a part of the debate and should be treated with enough respect to get a real reply. That being said, encouraging government snooping is an idea that can have terrible consequences and we shouldn't do it. It is going to be a support of some truly horrific future political shenanigans, including genocides, and we should be discouraging it everywhere.
