It’s really not the best way to start the video. The first 5 minute contain blatant misrepresentations of reality. The truth is, big data genuinely did lead to a revolution. As much as hacker news loves to harp on and on about big data being unnecessary (probably because these forums are dominated by engineers vs data scientists) big data literally created Google and Meta. Take any company in the S&P 500 and I can guarantee you that they are leveraging data to improve their business. You can personally say “well this isn’t a good kind of use of big data, it’s optimizing for the wrong thing” but in terms of money, plenty of people have used data to make money, and entire businesses are built on it, so it’s pretty disingenuous for this video to insinuate that the whole tech industry has essentially been running an elaborate scam since 2010, and that AI is a continuation of that.
- xenospn 2y agoYou’re assuming Google/Meta/other big tech existing is a net positive for humanity. I don’t think that’s necessarily true.
- therobots927 2y agoSo now we’re talking about business ethics, not financial feasibility? You’re just moving the goalposts. Has big data proven itself financially useful? The answer is an indisputable yes.
