I feel like the US should’ve supported them more during that time. Many dictators were pushed up to replace communists by the US, why didn’t they support a legitimate democratic movement?
- lern_too_spel 2y agoIt's easier to provide support to a dictator than it is to provide support to a large unorganized group pushing for democracy.
- randomtoast 2y agoI agree, but it wouldn't have made a significant difference in the grand scheme of things. I believe the entire West should have provided more support to Russia after the Soviet Union collapsed. Perhaps it would have been possible to peacefully transform Russia into a fully democratic country. Instead, Russia primarily experienced the downsides of the Soviet Union's collapse. As a result, we are now facing the problem of leaders like Putin, who want to revive the Soviet Union.
