In my middle age, I've been involved in some pretty grand world saving endeavors in my time. Multimillion dollar humanitarian programmes, that sort of thing.
The things I've done I've been most proud of and happy with have typically had nothing to do with all that.
It's amazing how awry attempts to "help" go. Ever been involved in delivering non-potable water to a school? I have. Or covering up fraud? Or sat in a meeting thinking of the most expensive way to solve a problem because you need to spend that cash in the next three months?
Most projects are just shit and would probably have been more effective being delivered by a helicopter lobbing cash out over the target area.
I'm most proud of where I've been able to help people I know in simple, practical ways. Helping friends practice for interviews, checking their CVs, helping people get the confidence to do cool stuff themselves.
Honestly, looking back on it all though, it's been creative stuff that's made me happiest.
I'm with the folks in the thread that encourage less grand goals.
