I find these polarizing opinions confusing. There are a very large number of applications of generative AI. People believe a lot of them will produce a lot of value. So yeah, a lot of grifters abound. That part is not dissimilar to the cryptocurrency wave. But then to make statements that all of the current AI wave is a grift seems like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
I for one am paying for generative AI in multiple areas such as image generation and code autocompletion. It's anecdata but it doesn't seem like I'm the only one willing to pay for this. I believe these valuable use cases that I legitimately think are worth paying for will stick around, and I think there are plenty more to still be discovered in the product space.
Finally, generative AI does have costs that makes it scale worse than the prices of the products using it in many cases (hence a lot of startups burning up their VC money too quickly on API costs), but there's a clear path to optimizing these costs by orders of magnitude, so again doesn't seem like an argument to say it's all a scam.
