i did this recently with laying ceramic tile. I had a wooden pallet left over from something being shipped to me so I added a flat sheet of particle board on top and then tiled it. I did not do a good job. But when it was over I had: 1. respect for professional tile people 2. a sense of failing at a task 3. (notice I also half-assed this comment)
