We did some math after a dinner party with a few EV owner friends to consider a plugin hybrid 40 miles EV range or full EV. One with a 21 Tesla had already done 2 free high voltage battery replacements within the warranty period which was required and concerning.
So, a plugin hybrid as a second step since the current mild-hybrid has worked well for us and it’s only left the city 3 times in 12 years.
I would be okay with the 300 mile epa range, 80% charge as recommended (240miles), then 70% of that because EPA range is uselessly done inside a lab environment on a dynamometer (168 miles), then if we go further to 80% of that for guaranteed max possible battery degradation after 8 years of use we end up with 134.4 miles of range for a full EV grocery getter. 120 miles is about 3 hours of highway/town driving and $15 to charge up at home which is fine.
A forced $10k-$20k to replace the battery not so much.
