Old Spotify Car Thing Hacks Gain New Attention
- pavel_lishin 2y agoI wonder how well this would work for a child's music device. I desperately want a device my child can bring with her to her room after bedtime to listen to music, without also being able to look at Youtube, or google for more tiger facts, or play games. Something that can be easily controlled with a physical input, and minimal screen interaction.
- hamandcheese 2y agoDoes it need to stream music? Any still-functioning iPod seems like it would do the trick.
- pavel_lishin 2y agoOne thing I forgot to put on the wishlist is an integrated speaker, which I guess the Car Thing doesn't have.
- dmitrygr 2y agoebay: "ipod speaker dock ipod bundle, working". buy-it-now. sort by price
- mcsniff 2y agoWhile it doesn't fit your requirement for physical input, you can "pin" an app on almost any modern Android phone.
- fzzzy 2y agoTechmoan on youtube made a video about something like this a while back. It has physical cards you insert into it that have rfid tags to trigger the music. I just went and looked it up again. It's called Yoto.
- jaygreco 2y agoI bought a car thing when Spotify was blowing them out, knowing full well they’d kill it. I planned on hacking on it and finding a cool alternate use for it. I have actually enjoyed using it at my desk as a dedicated “now playing” screen but the way it relies on Bluetooth drives me a bit crazy. My ideal homebrew app is just like the 1p Spotify one, but with the ability to use network over usb or the like so that it doesn’t need to sync the play status via Bluetooth. I guess the imminent shutdown might actually motivate me to do something along those lines.
