It's important for everyone, but especially kids, to use computers in a way that lends itself to creativity rather than consumption. There are ways to be creative with a phone, but the reality is that they have been engineered specifically to cater to consumption.
I already own my last smartphone. I wouldn't let my kids have one either. I would encourage them to use computers in creative ways though.
- surfingdino 2y agoNot owning a smartphone is not an option if at least one essential service you have to use requires MFA via an authenticator app.
- WesolyKubeczek 2y agoA TOTP app exists for KaiOS ;-)
- Rinzler89 2y agoUse MFA via SMS or via HW tokens. Yeah SMS is not as secure as an app but it's better than nothing, for those with dumb phones.
- popcalc 2y agoYou can run Yubico Authenticator locally on a desktop??? Or pass-otp?
- slothtrop 2y agoAbsent owning a computer, yes.
- Zambyte 2y agoWhy not? I have KeePassXC for TOTP, jmp.chat for SMS, and email for email. That covers all MFA requirements I have needed so far.
- josefresco 2y ago> to use computers in a way that lends itself to creativity rather than consumption This is why I'm against school policies of banning personal electronic devices. When I was in school, computers changed my life. Deciding that "these devices are bad" for a kid who makes digital art, codes or something else is harming. It's certainly an unpopular opinion these days, but one of my kids friends is an amazing digital artist and she can't take her tools to school. She spends (collectively) hours each week doing nothing because outside devices are banned, and her school issued Chromebook is not capable. Sure most kids use their devices for consumption, but you throw out the baby with the bathwater when you make blanket bans.
- slothtrop 2y ago> digital art, codes or something else These are smartphones, not tablets. This is exceedingly unlikely.
- josefresco 2y agoThe ban in my kids school district applies to all personal digital devices. No laptops, no tablets, smartphones are allowed (which makes this even crazier), only the school issued Chromebook can be used to "create". The artist I'm referring to creates on her iPad Pro with a pencil. She has to leave this at home.
- Zambyte 2y agoYeah, it sounds like to me the ban is on the exact opposite set of devices that it should be in your situation.
- egypturnash 2y ago> one of my kids friends is an amazing digital artist and she can't take her tools to school. She spends (collectively) hours each week doing nothing because outside devices are banned, and her school issued Chromebook is not capable. Is there a reason she can’t just… doodle in her notebooks? Or carry around a sketchbook in her bag? I am a pro artist and I cannot even begin to estimate how many hours of school I spent ignoring what I was supposed to be learning and drawing instead. The fundamentals of drawing do not require anything more than a way to make marks and a surface to make marks on.
- joerok 2y agoDitched social media (FB, Snapchat, TikTok) and found more time. Makes sense for me now (out of college), but what about kids? My son uses an iPad for Roblox, videos, and chats with me on a messaging app. He'll get a smartwatch soon, then a phone in middle school. It's about finding the balance - social media isn't all bad, and kids shouldn't bury themselves in it either. Every situation is different - there's no one-size-fits-all answer for raising kids in modern life.
