Show HN: Right-click and save content directly to Google Sheets
I released the initial version of the Add to Sheets Chrome extension recently. With the extension, you can predefine the destination sheet and column where you want to save content, and then save/add content from any webpage with a right-click. Almost like Pinterest for GSheets - instead of copy/paste, you can right-click/save.
- rickyrules 2y agoAdd to [target] would be extremely powerful. In my case target would be logseq in my PC or my Telegram bot in my phone
- siegers 2y ago(dev here) Are you thinking to bypass GSheets altogether? Or, go Sheets -> another integration.
- purple-leafy 2y agoLove seeing browser extensions on here, good stuff! Edited: originally asked about the high amount of reviews to users, realise it was a bit insensitive and forthcoming so have changed the comment to not detract from the achievement of publishing an extension
- whycome 2y agoI don’t think percentages apply to such a small initial sample. It makes sense that the earliest installers would be ones with a direct connection to the developer or via a more personal engagement. You can’t extrapolate anything from 24 users.
- purple-leafy 2y agoI know a large amount of people who build extensions, including myself. It’s just a really high percentage is all, which is atypical in my experience. People really don’t want to leave reviews, they really have to go out of their way to do so. But I can see your point of view. Also note that fake reviews plague the industry. I get about 10-20 emails a day from people wanting to “promote” my extension with “genuine” paid reviews. I apologise I probably should have come at this a bit lighter, genuinely just curious how they got so many reviews.
- siegers 2y ago(dev here) Something I've done different for this extension that I haven't done in the past: - had an email waitlist that got some interest for months leading up to the actual release - engaged with potential users in community channels (reddit/discord(s)/etc) to get early feedback and keep them in the loop - have buttons in the profile dropdown menu within the extension for "Provide feedback" and "Leave a review" All of these have made a big different, in general, to the overall process. I started doing this months before the extension was published. Happy to answer any questions.
- vector_spaces 2y agoThe site guidelines advise against cross examination, insinuations, and shallow dismissals of other people's work -- this kind of comment violates the spirit of this site, namely that of thoughtful, curious discussion. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- siegers 2y agodev here: feel free to ask any questions!
- gravity2060 2y agoVery cool. I don’t have thoughtful comments to add but I want to thank you for putting something useful into the world!
- siegers 2y agoThank you! The goal is to save time and reduce the back and forth of finding tabs - hopefully this helps solve some of that.
- cookingrobot 2y agoThis looks great, but I’m always nervous about granting access to google drive. Does this give permission to read everything on my Google Drive or just this one spreadsheet?
- siegers 2y ago(dev here) Completely understand the concern. This uses an embedded Google File picker to allow you to select what Sheets to allow access to. Until you do that, the extension doesn't have r/w access. The integration with Google (OAuth) has been verified and gone through their review process to only request/use minimal perms for the extension to function as expected. https://www.addtosheets.com/blog/how-to-save-data-to-google-sheets/#allowing-access-to-spreadsheets https://www.addtosheets.com/blog/how-to-save-data-to-google-...
