Some recruiters exclusively use LinkedIn as a source. You will be overlooked by them. It's difficult to demonstrate this matters, but I suspect it does. I wouldn't bother with any of the social networking aspects of LinkedIn. Turn off every notification you possibly can. I've gotten instructions accidentally mailed to me by recruiters indicating to only accept candidates with a profile photo. I've yet to decide if this means I should have one or not.
