What sort of repositories are worth buying/selling? Seems very risky: e.g. if buyers put malware there and damage your reputation. Perhaps this is a scheme to increase the number of stars someone has (since that’s transferred along with the repository)? Also, what stops them from forking the sold repository and continue development?
Just very confused about the concept in general
- EricDev 2y agoImagine you have build a boilerplate for next js. You put hard work in it and now want to sell the boilderplate. You go to our side connect your Repo and set a price. Then you get a link that you can share with friends or socialmedia. Of course their could be malware, but a repo doesnt install itself. You dont actually sell the ownership of the repo just add buyers as team members to your repo. To adress the possible theft. Of course someone could just use the code and mark it as their own. But thats a problem with every online medium. Pirating will always be a problem. I hope I could answer your questions. Let me know what you think
- _lvbh 2y agoAh so it’s selling access to source code, not the ownership of the repository itself. Makes sense then, I got a bit confused since GitHub is known as a place for open source
- gus_massa 2y agoYou can also have private repos with closed source code in Github.
- gus_massa 2y ago> You dont actually sell the ownership of the repo just add buyers as team members to your repo. I expect the buyer to want full ownership of the repo. If the original programer get's unhappy 2 year later, s/he can delete the code or do other nasty things. If I buy it, I want the previous owner out.
