We need to remember why we're electrifying the grid to begin with. To reduce carbon emissions and prevent a climate catastrophe. If we're not objectively moving towards that common goal, we must reconsider our strategy.
"30% of electrical generation" is a strange metric to celebrate. Electricity is only 1/5 of our fossil fuel consumption and by far the easiest to tackle. Also consider that electricity demand, fossil fuel consumption, and carbon emissions all increased during the same time period as our relative gains were acheived. Great for anyone invested in solar tech, net negative for the earth and her inhabitants. The atmosphere only cares about CO2 concentration, not our intentions.
What are we celebrating then? We can do much better.
