I'm actually in the middle of doing something kind of similar with wireless, but Bluetooth/BLE doesn't have the range to handle a stadium like this. Since the hardware that I'm using has high power LEDs and optical sensors, I'm now thinking of incorporating a similar mode to my project. I really like this post, it gave me a lot of ideas :-)
