Do you have said domain expertise? Of course it would seem obvious if you did. Personally I'm less familiar with IR technologies than RF, so I was expecting some radio-controlled design inside (with an overpowered IC). What they actually did seemed to me like one of those beautifully simple solutions which opened my mind a little. Sometimes simplicity is the most ingenious.
