Another weirdness: for Mac's Option key to work as "Alt" in VS Code (and many other programs IIRC), you need to set the keyboard layout to "Unicode Hex Input" instead of "US". Otherwise, the Option key enters accents and variations of letters (and there is no Alt). (Adding this very late, just in case I go back to this post for my own reference)
