I was laid off at 57. I've been rejected from hundreds of jobs
- dexwiz 2y agoHonest question, are articles like this propaganda to make people accept less than ideal working conditions? I feel like I am constantly inundated by posts like this. Never do I see anything to contradict it. There is no real conclusion or solution proposed in this article. I have seen Reddit posts with more substance. The article may as well be titled, “Work hard or this could be you!” And I see it in the news feed every week, if not every day. A constant reminder of what happens if you don’t get rich by the time you’re old.
- coldtea 2y agoWhat if that's also the reality though? You say "there's no real conclusion or solution". What if there's none except seizing the means of production, or something to that effect?
- cabirum 2y agoI think the point is to always have a 'plan B' for your income. Like, have an account to keep you afloat for a year or two; invest into some property to rent; start some business.
- aborsy 2y agoCan’t you do independent work past 57? Freelance, consulting, business, …
- creer 2y agoYes, there is a wide range of potential employers that can't afford someone full time - but would love part time work by an experienced specialist.
- creer 2y agoI feel that with keyword-based or other automated screening of applications, there is a strong potential for words that you might use inadvertently in a resume that will immediately make you ineligible for many employers at once. Presumably screening software all use a small number of independent (or dumb) keyword lists or criteria. For a similar example, if you have a sufficiently unusual email address you will run into the same misunderstanding of what email addresses are at many places. Your address is "good" but runs into the same stupid bug at many servers or organizations. Is there a service somewhere that will screen and score and explain your personal "standard" application for such words or phrases or features? That would be helpful in these cases where there is a feeling that "something is wrong" but it's hard to tell what is wrong in the approach.
- dexwiz 2y agoThere are a bunch of AI based screeners out there that do this. They look for specific words, but also overall phrasing and tone. I think they have the same pitfalls and any other LLM app. You can also hire a resume writer but I am dubious that these services haven’t just outsourced the work to AIs.
