There is a study i read a while ago which basically said fMRI pattern comparison studies may be suspect because of what fMRI actually does. "Lighting up" may not mean much, at least not in the sense of how papers that do this comparison. It is a shame that I can't locate it. There is probably a book on this topic as well.
