People tend not to admit they don't know why a social trend is happening, and will tend to give you a vague theory like this.
I'll note this article mentions doctors were also reluctant to admit they didn't know why drugs work. They similarly provided vague theories.

- s1artibartfast 2y agoThat doesn't mean the theories of drug action are wrong. Many have some truth to them, but are incomplete.
- swores 2y agoBut some of the ones most relevant to this conversation - SSRI antidepressants - have had wrong theories about how they work that to this day many healthcare professionals still believe.
