It's convenient that it has gained other meanings, but it's absolutely being used as a way of identification in nazi circles, and as a meme in adjacent spaces (i.e. the leaked group chats of "Itiotentreff", consisting mostly of far right police officers in Frankfurt) If you think this is a stretch and ridiculous I can't change your mind, except say that's the point of using coded language like that.
