Favourite old-school RPG or RTS? Bonus points if they weren't popular
- purple-leafy 2y agoI used to rock the Age of Empires 2 demo disc back during the dial-up internet days on an old no-name brand bulky white pc. For those who haven’t played it, Age of Empires is a “real-time strategy” (RTS) game set in an isometric top down view, where you command military units through different middle ages (Dark age, Feudal age, Castle age, Imperial age). The game operates on both a macro level - where you build your economy and battle opponents whilst amassing an army, and a micro level - where you tactically control which unit attacks which enemy unit or building. Now I was fortunate that one day my father came home with a random game he picked from the bargain bin. That game was “Warlords Battlecry 3”. The game is very similar to Age of Empires, but it’s in a fantasy setting with the undead, humans, lizard people, elves, demons… you name it. And you had a hero unit with special attributes, who could also have a small group of troops who would accompany them via a retinue system. I highly recommend one to check it out if they enjoy Age of Empires 2 or similar. It’s a very flawed game full of charm, and maybe even more fun than Age of Empires.

- purple-leafy 2y agoApologies missed that, intention was just to discuss RPG and RTS and share an example :)
- treebeard901 2y agoTotal Annihilation was a great RTS. Later ones went off the rails a bit. Kings Quest Legend of the Red Dragon and Tradewars 2002 from the BBS days
- purple-leafy 2y agoHave watched a great breakdown of the original Kings Quest. Trade wars and Legend of the Red Dragon sound awesome. Just before my birth :) til about Doors and bulletin board systems, very cool
