Feral goldfish are threatening the Great Lakes ecosystem [video]
- Animats 2y agoThe carp problem is much worse.[1] [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3oLeSPINOk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3oLeSPINOk
- peddling-brink 2y agoGoldfish are in the carp family. https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/aquaticanimals/goldfish.html https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/aquaticanimals/goldfis...
- elihu 2y agoInteresting bit of trivia: the Great Lakes are connected to the Mississippi watershed by a canal, and there is a section of the canal that is electrified to discourage fish from crossing to the other side. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moiGHtku14E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moiGHtku14E

- zoky 2y agoNot quite understanding why they turn the carp back rather than culling them. The video mentions something about heavy metals and PCBs, but I’m not seeing why that presents a problem as far as, I dunno, euthanizing and tossing them into a landfill? Or even just throwing the dead ones back into the lake? I can’t imagine a dead fish full of toxic substances is any worse than a live one that will, naturally, be dead sooner or later…
- nwellinghoff 2y agoYeah agreed. Just grind them. Somehow people have no problem depleting massive natural stocks of fish for food but when its a “pet” you can’t kill it? People are getting too soft…
- pfannkuchen 2y agoLiterally “design by committee”, probably.
- vlark 2y agoThe takeaway they don't say: When you tire of your goldfish, kill them instead of releasing them.
