We all need to do more to promote linux.
I find it a mammoth task to convince windows users that linux is better in so many ways.
I am the only long time user of linux at my art group.
I have installed Mx-linux for two of the elderly people in the group but this is only because they were still using old laptops with windows and the old machines were incredibly slow.
After a few weeks of getting used to the new package names (vlc, firefox, libreoffice, thunderbird etc), learning how to update and learning how to connect to wifi they were full of praise about linux.
They loved the simplicity of linux, simply clicking the start menu to find a package compared to windows overly complex way to find things. The simplicity of plugging in their external drive to look through all their family photos.
I do install the addons in firefox, remove google search, add their favourite shortcuts to the firefox home page, put what packages they use most often in the panel. I run through the themes and icon preferences so the desktop looks exactly how they want it.
I guide them through the update process, two clcks and a password.
I uninstall any packages that they are unlikely to ever use, pidgin hexchat etc.
They liked that fact that they did not have to wait hours to install updates, nor wait hours while the anti-virus scan finished and all the other unnecessary complexities built into windows.
have you ever watched an elderly person navigate through windows trying to find a photo of their grand children that they were sure they saved in the pictures folder.
How wonderful:
press the start button on your laptop
wait 90 seconds for it to load
click on firefox, click on one of the shortcuts and read your favourite newspaper without any intrusions.
Click on thunderbird and read all your email.
Job done!
